Mary, Yes She Knows
The melody for the Christmas song “Mary, Did You Know,” is quite beautiful, but the lyrics never give Mary a chance to answer the songwriter’s questions. So, I added two verses.
I first heard heard the popular Christmas song “Mary Did You Know?” some years ago. I thought the melody was quite beautiful, but the lyrics by Mark Lowry [1] did not give Mary a chance to answer his questions. So, last year I added two new verses.
Here they are, published for the first time, along with a rendition by my sister Carol.
First, my revised lyrics [2]:
Mary, Yes She Knows
[Congregation sings…]
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered
Will soon deliver you.[Mary sings…]
Children, yes, I knew, about my baby boy,
Because the angel told me,
By the power of God, that I would conceive
The Son of God most holy.
Yes, I knew, and obeyed the Lord,
His word I would fulfill.
For me He has done such great things,
According to His will.[Congregation sings…]
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You've kissed the face of God.[Mary sings…]
Children, yes, I knew, for the shepherds came,
And told me of God’s favor.
The angel said to them, that my son was born
The Messiah and our Savior.
And He is our Emmanuel,
Who saves us all from sin.
These words I’ve ever treasured
And kept them all within.[Congregation sings…]
Mary, did you know?
[All together]
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb.
Mary, yes, she knows
That her baby boy is Lord of all creation.
Mary, yes, she knows
That her baby boy would one day rule the nations.
Yes, she knows
That her baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb.
This sleeping child she’s holding
Is the Great I Am!Mary, yes she knows.
And here is a rendition by my sister Carol Peracchio and her congregation at Feed & Seed, Fletcher, NC, in December 2024.
